Fallout Analysis

How is age being represented in the extract 'Fallout'
Discuss with reference to Sound, Mis En Scene, Camera Work and Editing

After watching this clip, my first impressions of this age group is
that are:
  • Focussed
  • Fast Paced
  • Talented
  • Hard working

The clip begins with the scene of a group of young boys playing
basketball in what looks to be a school's sports hall. The clip
is very fast paced with slow, soothing music, which makes it seem
as though these people are used to doing this and that it almost
comes natural to them. The soothing music makes the whole
basketball game, although it's quite fast paced, flow very nicely.
The subtle beat to the music fits very well with the clip as it sounds
slightly like basketballs bouncing on the floor, sharp and well
spaced beats.
This is where i got the impression that young people
are being represented as talented.

The setting which they are in, a school's sports hall, suggests they
are good pupils who stay after school for activities. Whereas if they
were playing in a local park, this would suggest that they do not do
any work, that they go straight from school and just playing
basketball or 'hang out'. The clothing that they are wearing are

all quite similar, grey and blue, this shows that they are part of a
team and work together. This
is where i got the impression that
young people are being represented as hard working.

The camera mostly crabs along quickly with one certain character
as he plays basketball. Because the camera doesnt move as
quickly as the charcter does, it gives the impression that the

characters are very skilled at this game and can play it at an
impressive speed. These 'quick-but-not-quick-enough' movements
of the camera are used also when the camera is tilting and panning
sideways to track the ball's movements.
This is where i got the
impression that young people are being represented as hard fast
paced and focussed.
